Walter Dudley Ford, of Wilmington, DE, went home to be with the Lord peacefully on Monday, August 20, 2018 surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.
Walter was born in New Brunswick, NJ, son of the late Carlton and Dorothy Ford. He was raised and educated in Westfield, NJ and then relocated to Wilmington, DE after marrying the love of his life, Doris Kohr Ford of York, PA.
From 1943 to 1946, Walter served in the U.S. Navy and in 1945 was in the Third Fleet in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He participated as Combat Information Center Officer on the USS HEERMAN.
In 1947, Walter graduated with high honors from Colgate University in Hamilton, NY and went on to attend Yale Law School, New Haven, CT, graduating with an L.L.B. Degree in June of 1950. Walter practiced law at the DuPont Company Legal Dept. in Wilmington, DE for nearly 40 years. In 1989, he retired as Senior Counsel in the Litigation Division.
A lifelong outdoors enthusiast, Walter was particularly interested in hiking, tennis and skiing. He shared his love for the outdoors with his wife and children on summer camping trips to the National Parks in the U.S. He enjoyed tennis at the DuPont Country Club for many years. After retirement, he and Doris expanded their horizons with world travel including trekking in the Himalayas.
Walter is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Doris, of 70 years; children, David Ford (Mary) of South Canaan, PA, Mary Ann Ford of Philadelphia, PA, Kathryn Beers (Ernest) of Bear, DE and Walter Ford (Jill) of Granby, CT. He will be fondly remembered as “G-Dad, Granddad, or Granddaddy” by his 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Louise Ralph of Newark, DE and Marion Philips of Kirkwood, MO; and 8 nieces and nephews and their families.
A private Graveside Service will be held at the Lower Brandywine Cemetery on Wednesday, August 29, 2018. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:30 am at New Life Christian Fellowship, 2712 Old Milltown Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808. All are welcome.
